We Did It! Indeed We Did. FLING 2011 was The Best Fling Yet.
By Janet L Hyman, Director of Community Development, FLING Chair 2011
On April 2, 2011 Herndon-Reston FISH held its' 6th Annual Fun FLING Fundraiser at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Herndon, Virginia. We had almost 220 guests and “netted” over $53,000 to provide funds for assisting people in the Herndon/Reston area with Friendly Instant Sympathetic Help. Jane Drewes did her Balloon Magic to turn the ballroom into a festive "under the sea" setting. Flowers were done by Suzanne Rudiselle, Debra Casey, and Jennifer Moon. (the reason I said netted is because I think we made well over $60,000 but don't know the exact nos.)
The evening began with delicious hot appetizers, beverages, games, and chamber music provided by two members of The Emperor's Quartet. Over 120 Silent Auction items were beautifully displayed on which our guests generously bid. ABT photographer, Alicia Baker, was taking portrait photos of guests. Singles in the Suburbs helped Ellen Graves with the Fun Games while Brownie and Junior Scouts from Troop 1931 sold tickets.
Then we enjoyed a delicious 3 course dinner and Don Owens was our MC. Carl Larsen provided listening and dance music throughout the evening. Ken Plum conducted the Live Auction and sold all the items available.
Six Star Fish were honored for their continued volunteer efforts for FISH. They are Maureen Palmedo, Karen Stevens, Dorothy O’Hara, Suzanne Fulton, Jane Blanchard and Dorothy Banzon.
A long time, very dedicated volunteer who served on our Information and Referral Service,Trudy Gibson, had died on April 1, 2011. Suzanne Rudiselle offered some comforting words. Then, Ken Plum auctioned "Nothing" and people made many generous donations to FISH in Trudy's memory.
Dancing continued through check out time and the evening came to an end at 11:15 PM. Special thanks to our check out guru, Mike Drewes whose computing skills make this a speedy process.
Thanks to all the wonderful people who attended and helped with FLING 2011, it truly was "The Best Fling Ever".
Mark your calendars now--FLING 2012 will be on May 19, 2012 at the Dulles Crowne Plaza Hotel in Herndon, VA.

Fling Evolution
Herndon-Reston FISH was formed in 1969 by a few residents to provide local families with assistance. Through the years, our volunteer leaders have developed and pursued a variety of types funding sources including a thrift shop (The Bargain Loft), grants and fundraising projects.
We held a Summer Fling for a number of past years that was an annual party for FISH volunteers. In 2006 Lisa Groves began our current Spring Fling format, which features silent and live auctions and sponsorships to raise funds. Janet Hyman, Director of Community Development, has overseen the expansion of the Fling to its current size (more than $50,000 profit in 2010), and it has become one of our major sources of funding for FISH's assistance program. |
