FISH is a nonsectarian 501(c)(3) nonprofit serving Herndon and Reston residents with timely emergency assistance and community support.
OUR MISSION
Compassion made practical.
Since 1969, Herndon-Reston FISH has helped individuals and families manage short-term financial emergencies before they become destabilizing crises. A small staff and a remarkable volunteer community make that work possible.
FISH works closely with Fairfax County social workers, local schools, hospitals, and nonprofit partners. Together, they connect residents with the right help at the right time.

FISH MADE A DIFFERENCE
Help made it possible to begin again.
After being falsely arrested and later fully exonerated, Cynthia had lost her job, car, housing, and possessions. FISH provided $925 so she could reinstate her driver's license, reconnect her phone, and obtain other essentials needed to seek employment and restart her life.

Funds to support FISH activities come from a variety of sources:

One important contributor is Fairfax County, which in the most recent fiscal year (2025) contributed 45% of our funds.

Donors from the community—including individuals, grantmakers, FISH Fling contributors, businesses, and churches—accounted for nearly half.
